In addition to receiving her BA at the University of Pennsylvania, Crocker also was a student of colorist painters, Wolf Kahn and Cynthia Packard, both of whom link to the major Abstract Expressionist Hans Hofmann.
Crocker's first solo show was in 2004, and she has been exhibiting across the USA ever since. Her work is collected worldwide, and she is listed in Marquis' Who's Who in the World.
STATEMENT:
“When creating paintings of barns, my process starts with a loose charcoal drawing on a canvas.I often use a strong ground color such as cadmium red. The next step is to create just a few colors on my palette. I apply paint to the canvas with brushes, rags, the back ends of my brushes and my hands. As the painting develops, I keep creating new colors in reaction to the colors already used. I will often go back and change colors...it’s a constant balancing act to try to create the most pleasing juxtaposition of colors. The painting is as much about how colors are arranged as it is about the subject matter.
Large areas of color invite the viewer to rest their eyes and mind, to take a deep breath and to dive into that big color. At the same time, I balance the larger areas of color with smaller more intense areas of color or happenings. I liken this to music, with deep tones and higher pitches. Music is an integral part of my painting process. It helps to bring me away from thought and to that zone where creativity and instinct take the lead.
My barn paintings are calm and peaceful...the goal is to depict the essence of the place...to capture the mood and light and to focus on what my subject may be feeling. I can imagine the heat of the sun or coolness of the shade that a barn may feel. The light makes me think of the interconnectedness of all things. The sunlight reaching out to the solitary buildings serves as a reminder that we are all part of something larger...that there is a universal connection running through all of us. My belief is that nothing is truly alone, but rather that infinite energy runs through everyone and everything connecting us all.”
